Milkman puts out shop fire with 320 pints

By Michael Fleet

A MILKMAN on his early morning round put out a fire in a shop by dousing it with milk.

With the help of two postman, Steven Leech, 35, poured 320 pints on to the flames at Magpies gift shop in Redruth, Cornwall.

He was named Hero Milkman of the Millennium by the National Dairymen’s Association. His action was credited with saving seven other shops with flats above.

Mr Leech said yesterday: “The smoke was very thick and some of the milk was burning, but we carried on until the fire brigade arrived.”

John Ward, his boss at the Unigate/Dairycrest depot in nearby Camborne, said: “Afterwards he carried on with his round. We only heard about it when he filled in a report to say where the 320 pints had gone.”
